Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system, consisting of 47-member states that the UN General Assembly elects. It was founded in 2006 to replace the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The council is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights internationally, as well as addressing situations of human rights violations and providing recommendations to mend them.

The Human Rights Council holds its regular sessions three times a year, in March, June, and September. It reviews and votes on renewing the mandate related to the human rights situation in Iran every March.
