On Wednesday March 12, Dr. Mai Sato, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, published her first report to the UN Human Rights Council. The HRC’s 58th session is currently underway, and will host both Dr. Sato the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran’s 3 experts for a joint Interactive Dialogue on March 18.
In her report, Dr. Sato focuses on the gendered nature of human rights abuses, underscoring discrimination against women in marriage, divorce, inheritance, and the justice system, while viewing the widespread resistance to compulsory hijab as a sign of the people’s determination for change. She also calls out the rise in the use of the death penalty and calls for an immediate halt to all executions, especially for juvenile offenders.
