There is shared concern among UN State Members about the situation of human rights of women and girls, and women’s and girls’ rights advocates in Iran. That concern is reflected in at least 79 recommendations to the Islamic Republic of Iran in the 2019 report ( 3rd Cycle) of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (“UPR”) referring explicitly to the enjoyment of women’s and girls’ human rights in law and in practice.
At least 23 recommendations called on Iran to ratify, or consider ratifying, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (“CEDAW”). The Government did not support any of these recommendations and has not ratified the Convention, nor taken any steps in that direction since 2019.
