Ms. Asma Jahangir, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran passed away on February 11, 2018. Human rights defenders mourn her death, as with her passing Iranian society lost one of the most vocal champions of its rights, its fundamental freedoms, and its fight for dignity. Our thoughts are with her friends and family, in Pakistan and around the world.
OHCHR has put out a call to the UN member states and civil society members for applications for candidates to the post of Special Rapporteur on Iran. Individual applications, including the motivation letter, must be submitted and received by May 4 (12 noon GMT) through an online application procedure, which consists of an online survey and an application form in Word format. Consultative group, consisting of representatives from Ethiopia, Singapore, Azerbaijan, Ecuador, and Israel, will evaluate the candidacies and present its recommendations to the President of the Human Rights Council. The appointment will be finalized when the selected candidate put forward by the President is approved by the Human Rights Council. The appointment will be made during the 38th session of the Council June 18 – July 6, 2018).
